- A handsome Choice Proof, and also a very rare coin. The obverse retains considerable pinkish-orange mint color, a bit subdued by pale olive iridescence, and the upper and right field areas display swirls of deeper steel-brown patina. The reverse is more extensively toned in light brown and steel-olive, but it also retains appreciable pinkish-apricot mint color that is readily evident with direct lighting. The strike detail is exactly as one would expect for a Proof, the rims broad and squared off, the design elements fully rendered and crisp. A few trivial obverse carbon flecks help to define the grade, but none are singularly distracting, and one just above Liberty's hair bun serves as a useful identifier for provenance purposes. The eye appeal is strong.
The Newcomb-8 is a Proof-only die pairing of the 1844 Braided Hair cent, and it shares is reverse with Proof-only strikes of the 1845, 1846, 1847, 1848 and 1849 dates. Writing in his 2021 reference The Die Varieties of United States Large Cents: 1840-1857, in fact, Bob Grellman opines that all six of these Proof-only varieties were struck at the same time, possibly after regular issue large cent production ceased in 1857. Regardless, the 1844 N-8 is very rare with only 12 to 15 Proofs extant in all grades. Breen listed 13 distinct examples of this variety known to him when he wrote his Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins, and commented that he had seen four others. Our last offering for a Proof from this die pairing was in our July 2015 sale of the Twin Leaf Collection. This one is considerably finer in that it retains significant mint color (the Twin Leaf coin was certified PCGS/CAC Proof-64+ BN),and will surely sell for a strong bid to an advanced collector.
