- A generally chestnut brown example with streaks of charcoal at the peripheries on both sides, lower left reverse with a splash of lighter tan-gold. The impression is well centered on both sides, which show bold to sharp definition for virtually all major design elements. The surfaces are generally hard and frosty, there are no troublesome marks, and just a bit of planchet porosity associated with the aforementioned charcoal streaks is all that precludes a higher numeric grade. While Newman 12-X is among the most common Fugio varieties in high grade, second only to 13-X, and several hundred were among the Bank of New York's hoard, collector demand for attractive Choice Mint State examples such as this far exceeds supply.
