- A formidable rarity that ranks among the most desirable Liberty Head double eagles in this sale. This coin retains sharp to full strike detail to most design elements, those that are not still presenting as bold. Traces of original luster persist, especially in the more protected areas around the devices, and pleasing honey-orange patina further enhances the eye appeal. There are no marks of individual consequence, just wispy hairlines that are well within the context of the grade assigned by NGC.<p>As with much of the early products of the San Francisco Mint, most examples of this issue that were released into commerce stayed there and saw heavy use. The typical survivor is well worn, if not also impaired, and as of this writing, only three grading events for Mint State coins are listed across PCGS and NGC combined. As an overall sharply defined AU, the coin offered here is sure to catch the eye of advanced double eagle enthusiasts.
