- 1895 Morgan Silver Dollar. Proof-68 Ultra Cameo (NGC). Undisputed "King of the Morgan Dollars," the proof only 1895-P has the lowest total population of any date and mintmark combination in this widely collected series. No business strikes of this issue are known to exist (a figure of 12,000 pieces "struck" for the 1895-P given in Mint records is now thought to represent one final delivery of coins dated 1894), which means that survivors of the year's 880 piece proof issue are the only Philadelphia Mint Morgans with the 1895 date available to today's collectors.<br /> Given the popularity of the Morgan dollar series and the large number of numismatists assembling date and mint sets of this type, the proof 1895 commands a strong price even when impaired due to circulation and/or cleaning. On the complete opposite end of the spectrum is this mystifying Superb Gem, a coin the likes of which most collectors can only dream of owning. Numbering among the finest certified for the issue, both sides are aglow with an untoned, silver-white, deeply cameoed sheen. Satin to softly frosted devices are also possessed of needle sharp striking detail, and they contrast powerfully with deeply mirrored fields. One of the most exquisite proof 1895 Morgans ever to grace one of our auctions, and a coin that would serve as a centerpiece in the finest cabinet.
