An early die state without any trace of the sizeable obverse break that eventually involves the upper left part of the clock, this piece also offers exceptionally sharp central strike detail in a thick planchet Mott token. Peripheral detail is likewise impressive, even though the border denticulation is uneven. With hard and frosty surfaces that are pleasingly smooth in autumn-brown, this is one of the most appealing examples of the type we have ever had the privilege of bringing to auction. The exact origins of these tokens remain a mystery, but it is likely they were made at least a few decades after the 1789 date they bear and the die work appears to match that of some other tokens produced by Robert Lovett, Sr. in the 1830s.
