Classic Early 20th Century 20 Pesos CUBA. 20 Pesos, 1915. Philadelphia Mint. PCGS PROOF-63 Deep Cameo Gold Shield. Fr-1; KM-21. Mintage: Unknown; the Standard Catalog of World Coinslists a mintage of 24 sets for the 1915 proof set. The sole certified example with the "DCAM" designation on the PCGS population report. An EXTREMELYRAREearly 20th century classic, clearly struck in limited quantities, produced at one of the most advance mints in the world to the highest quality available at the time. This iconic and heavily sought after issue exhibits sharp well defined intricate details with frosted surfaces in stark contrast to the hard mirrored fields offering much reflectivity. The open areas display light wispy hairlines from long ago now subdued by a very delicate pale golden-orange color becoming more distinct on the frosted cameo devices, but just enough to be able to differentiate between the inner fields and the legends. The outer edges of the legends remain quite originally flashy with higher degree brilliance. This specimen was obviously well cared for by its numismatic custodians for more than 100 years, its certain to pique the interest of advanced collectors of world gold or Cuban destined for a fine cabinet. Dies engraved and prepared by Charles E. Barber. These issues were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, on the same weight standard and fineness of contemporary United States $20 gold coins. Although proof mintage records for this year are yet unknown, it is estimated that less than a few dozen proof 20 pesos were actually minted, with some sources suggesting a much smaller number. According to the 1915 Annual Report of the Director of the United States Mint that specifically states the "Act, approved October 26, 1914, for the coinage of Cuban currency." Article VII of this act which relates to gold coins specifically, including the issues struck in proof quality (though without special mention) and reads as, "Gold coins of 5, 10, 20, pesos shall be of the same shape, weight, and value as the corresponding coins of the United States of America, and those of 4, 2, and 1 peso shall be proportionate to the above in size and weight." As outlined in Article IV of the same act the standards of fineness for the Cuban issues, reading in part, "For gold coin: 900/1000 pure metal, with a tolerance of 1/1000 both as to weight and fineness." In fact the exact specifications of the Cuban 20, 10 and 5 Pesos correlates to the then current United States double eagles ($20), eagles ($10) and half eagles ($5) being produced contemporaneously.
