- Tompkins Die Stage 2/2, Rea et al. Die State c. Tompkins Plate Coin. A generally bright silver gray piece with glints of peripheral iridescence that are most pronounced at upper left reverse. Quite well struck for the type, the high points of Liberty's portrait with light wear, reverse soft right of center due to die swell in the field around the olive branch. The surfaces are a tad glossy to suggest an old, light cleaning, but considerable luster persists in a frosty to semi-reflective finish, and there are no marks that we deem worrisome at the assigned grade level.
Representing the final use of this obverse die, which was earlier used in the 1806 B-6, B-7 and B-8 pairings, and the only use of this reverse die, the 1806 Browning-10 is a rare variety that will require persistence to acquire. This is especially true in grades above EF, although patience will pay dividends as there are a number of AU and Mint State coins known. The finest is easily the D. Brent Pogue specimen, ex Matthews Adams Stickney, that sold in our May 2015 Pogue I Sale as PCGS MS-64. The offered example from the Tompkins Reference Collection is also included in our consignor's 2008 census, as CC#4, and it is ranked CC#5 in the 2010 Rea et al. census.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: Although there are three Uncirculated examples out there, only a handful of AU coins exist for this variety. This rare coin came to me at a relatively small show on the West Coast that took place right after a show in Hawaii, where the dealer I purchased it from had just been set up. I think he owned it for a total of five days during and in between those two shows.
