- 96.6 grains. A very handsome example of this highly elusive issue, with choice chocolate brown surfaces and excellent aesthetic appeal. The punch is well rendered, with the legends clear and complete. The scalloped border of the punch is well defined everywhere but below Penny. Some old buildup persists within the lettering, doing little but assuring the viewer of this piece's originality. A very subtle round outline is seen on the reverse, left from the initial impression of the punch, but otherwise the surfaces are featureless, showing neither significant evidence of the host or any but the most minor marks. Free of scratches, dents, or corrosion, this is a premium piece for the grade. The rim is a little out of round near 3 o'clock relative to the obverse, without impact on the visual appeal.<p>PCGS has certified an example of this variety on nine occasions, and VF-30 is far and away their favorite grade, assigned to five of the nine pieces. This piece stands out significantly among the No D pieces we've offered in the last two decades, finer than many graded higher on the basis of its completeness and eye appeal. In April 2025, we sold an NGC AU-58 for $31,200, though the grade did not account for the fact that the Church Penny was actually used as the undertype for a light striking of a later Canadian token. A PCGS AU Details, Holed piece with excellent color brought $15,600 in our November 2024 sale, and Syd Martin's PCGS VF-30 with a substantial piece missing brought $9,000. The PCGS VF-30 we offered in August 2019 had an incomplete mark. The last really complete and problem free example of this No D variety we've offered was the PCGS F-15 sold in our August 2011 ANA sale for $17,825. We would not be surprised if another decade passed before an example of this quality crossed our desks.
