1808 S-277 R2. PCGS graded MS-62+ Brown.Lustrous tan and light brown blending to light chocolate on the highpoints. Peeps of faded mint red remain visible in protected areas on the reverse and this cent has mint state eye appeal. Just a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. The only marks, and they are trivial, are a couple tiny ticks on the bust and a few more at the 1 in the date. The best identifying mark is a tiny planchet chip at the dentil tips below the end of the wreath stem (as struck). M-LDS, Breen state VII. The die cracks at the D in UNITED and sinking at STAT are strong, and the first star is completely missing as a result. In addition there is a raised retained cud nestled between the two cracks inside the D. Graded MS60 net AU55 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #20291. Bland says AU55 and tied for CC#7. Our grade is AU58.A great example of this popular die state (many claimed to be the "12-Star" die state have a weak but partially visible first star; see the following lot). The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer: 1 in 63, 1 in 64, 1 in 66.(PCGS # 36457) Value $14,000 - UP
