- 1859 Liberty Seated Half Dime. Proof-66+ (NGC). This is one of the finer certified survivors from a mintage of 800 Proofs, which total proved overly generous in light of the Mint's then only recent attempts to market Proof coinage to collectors on a wider scale. Most 1859 half dimes produced in this format remained unsold, the Mint disposing of those coins in later year by placing them into circulation. Scarce in an absolute sense relative to the mintage, the Proof 1859 is rare with the quality and eye appeal offered in the present specimen. NGC Census: 1; 7 finer in this category (Proof-68 finest).
