A wholly original superb gem with nearly immaculate satiny surfaces. The coin is as struck and only a microscopic tic or two from perfection. Although Type 3 Gold Dollars were issued until 1889, the public had little use for the denomination and mintages were generally quite low. At 15,501 the 1888 had the second highest mintage after 1874, and the date can be readily found up to and including gem quality. The present superb gem is conditionally challenging and is among the finer known. PCGS 56, NGC 42, CAC 27. Only 22 finer including 3 PCGS MS68 CAC’S. The PCGS price guide lists the value at $3,000, however the coin is listed in the CAC price guide at $4,680. An MS68 CAC, if it were possible to find one, would cost $10-15,000, 3 to 5 times the current market value for this grade, making this delightful, superb gem a great value. Cert. Number 2254977 PCGS # 7589
