- July Forward Consignment. Fancy words and flowery description are not required to convey the instant emotional response regarding the appeal of this coin: it immediately qualifies for the Scotsman Cataloger's Choice Award. The award is handed out to coins based purely on their aesthetic merits, with total disregard as to value or grade, but the astounding visual impact of this stunning jewel cannot be overstated. It has survived from a tiny mintage of fifty pieces struck in an era (the Civil War) when concern over the survival of a nation far exceeded any concern over the preservation of a few shiny coins, yet time has managed to be kind to this piece. The surfaces survive with a minimum of soaring, feathery hairlines in the fields and no contact marks at all. Outrageous cameo contrast seems almost unfathomable of minting technology from the days when General Sherman was still marching his troops across Georgia. Devices are almost cottony with a delicate tinge of gold, standing up in unbelievable relief over mirrored fields that slip away from view under certain viewing angles. Closer examination reveals extreme intricacy of details, including tiny, individual pebbles of texture within letters and numerals of all the legends. Better impression of the design elements doesn't seem possible, and the fields display glimpses of orange-peel texture here and there. NGC has never graded a finer ULTRA CAMEO, with the pinnacle of quality augmented by the "star" designation for superior eye-appeal. That "star" all by itself just about sums it all up as tidily as can be (scotia).
