Reeded Edge
GREAT BRITAIN. Pattern Half Broad, Dated 1656 (1738). Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector (1653-58). NGC PROOF-63 CAMEO. Sole Certified Example.
Sole Certified Example. S-unlisted; KM-PnA26; North-pg. 208, i; cf.Wilson & Rasmussen-41 (Rarity 7). EXCEEDINGLY RARE. Struck in gold. Reeded edge (vertical on this piece though noted as oblique in W&R, thus the cf.). By John S. Tanner, struck at the Royal Mint in London circa 1738. "OLIVAR D G RP ANG SCO HIB & PRO" Laureate bust of Oliver Cromwell facing right; Reverse: "PAX QUAERITUR BELLO" (Peace is sought through war) Crowned shield of the Protectorate, lion at center, date above. Fantastic mirror proof surfaces with exceptional luster. The sole certified example. From a current population speculated to be in the low single digits.
As mentioned in the previous lot, after the fall of the Commonwealth and the painful death (due to kidney stones) of the Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell, the dies for the Cromwell portrait coinage were sold to the Dutch. Some imitation coins were produced right away and after a short series of strikings the dies were put into stasis. In the 1730's these dies were sent back to England. John Tanner, an engraver at the Royal Mint, re-worked these dies for usage again. He also supplemented them with a Half Broad die, which was never originally produced in 1656.
Estimate: $20,000 - $30,000.
Provenance: From the Michael Druck Collection.
