- 1868 Pattern Ten Cents. Judd-647, Pollock-720. Rarity-6-. Proof-66 (NGC). The obverse design is the same the Mint used to strike regular issue Braided Hair Cents from the early 1840s through the series' end in 1857. The reverse exhibits the denomination TEN CENTS surrounded by a laurel wreath. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the border. Struck in nickel with a plain edge.<br /> An interesting Ten Cent pattern, this piece is nearly the same size as a large Cent from the 1840s and 1850s. The present specimen is sharply struck with modest reflectivity and faint striations (as struck) in the fields. An even silver-gray sheen to both sides, the surfaces equally free of grade-limiting blemishes. The website uspatterns.com accounts for only two dozens examples of this type in numismatic hands.
