- “1781” (ca. 1871) John Eager Howard at Cowpens medal. Copper, Bronzed. 46 mm. Adams and Bentley-12, Betts-595, Julian MI-9. Philadelphia Mint “Gunmetal dies.” SP-65 (PCGS). Deep mahogany brown with a slight satin finish and pleasing luster in the fields. Sharp and evenly struck with high rims that have nicely protected the surfaces during the obviously minimal handling this piece has seen. Though not from the original dies, this series has always been popular and all variants are sought after by collectors. This is a particularly nice example of this early Philadelphia Mint variant produced from dies that proved of insufficient quality for long-term use. Indeed, though this is an early state (as evidenced by three sharp vertical die lines through the ribbon at the upper reverse), there is slight crumbling inside the rims.
