- Tompkins Die Stage 2/2, Rea et al. Die State P-a. Slightly reflective mauve-gray surfaces accented with pale blue, lilac, olive and amber peripheral iridescence. Central weakness is noted on both obverse and reverse with the eagle's upper body and head very flat; this is typical for the 1806 Browning-5 variety. Struck from slightly misaligned dies with the obverse border strongest from 12 to 3 o'clock; the reverse is better centered. Impressively smooth with considerable frosty mint luster remaining, this coin is strongly suggestive of an AU-58 grade and will certainly command a significant premium from the winning bidder.
This scarce and conditionally challenged variety shares its reverse with the 1806 B-6 quarter; the obverse of the 1806 B-5 appears in no other pairing. While a few Mint State survivors are known, the lower reaches of the Condition Census are populated by Choice AU coins. This is one of them, and it is ranked CC#5 in the 2008 Tompkins census, tied for CC#7 in the 2010 Rea et al. census. Given that Draped Bust quarters seldom come with this kind of quality and originality in the finer circulated grades, this outstanding 1806 B-5 will appeal to discerning type collectors as well as advanced variety enthusiasts.
There is some confusion in the literature regarding the earliest die states of this variety, with both the Tompkins and Rea et al. references asserting that, when lightly cracked through the tops of the letters NIT in UNITED, the reverse is linked to the perfect state of the obverse. The present example (as well as the coin in the following lot) shows that this is incorrect, since it exhibits not only the aforementioned reverse crack, but also a very light obverse crack across the top of the letter Y in LIBERTY.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: One always hopes to own coins once owned by other famous collectors. I had the fortune of doing just that with several coins, but this was my one and only Eliasberg quarter.
