A very high grade and desirable Proof Morgan dollar. The first year of issue had two distinct reverse types struck in Proof, the first, the 8 Tail Feathers, and then the correct 7 Tail Feathers struck later in the year. While the mintage of Proof 8 Tail Feather Morgan dollars was not recorded, it is estimated that around 500 were struck. To date, PCGS and NGC have combined graded 314 examples in all grades and designations, not including any in "details" holders or coins that may still be in the "wild" but does include for sure a number of duplicate submissions. The currently offered PREMIUM GEM, ranks among the HIGHEST GRADED specimens at PCGS in the designation; the ONLY PR66 CAM graded and just four are finer. The Cameo contrast is awesome. Razor sharp devices have a thick, rich frosty texture that stands out in stark contrasted relief to the icy, sleek mirrored fields that surround them. There are some very light lines seen with the aid of a strong glass, which is all that keeps this PR66 CAM from an even higher grade. Some delicate peripheral tone can be seen when rotated in a light, but the eye appeal is mostly untoned, brilliant silver. The eye appeal is intense. Only 500 are estimated to have been struck. PCGS 1, NGC 12. This coin sold for $50,400 in November 2021, and the current PCGS Price Guide value is $57,500.
