- While a couple of slightly finer examples are known, this offering for a handsome Choice AU example would be very difficult to beat for the 1855-D quarter eagle. All seen for this issue have poorly struck borders, where the denticulation is more or less soft, but here the central design elements are reasonably sharp. Classic deep reddish-orange hues mix with a patch of golden-steel iridescence at the upper obverse border, where a trivial planchet lamination (as made) is also seen. Nicely composed surfaces, as brief circulation and subsequent careful handling were the experience here. No deep or detracting marks are present, although a couple of shallow nicks on Liberty's jaw are noted for accuracy. A conditionally scarce and desirable example of this challenging issue, and destined for an advanced collection of Southern gold.<p>The 1855-D is one of the true prizes among Dahlonega Mint quarter eagles. The recorded mintage is 1,123 pieces with perhaps 50 to 60 known in all grades today. Among Dahlonega Mint quarter eagles only the 1856-D has a lower mintage of 874 pieces. The 1855-D is an extreme condition rarity that is typically seen in VF to low end EF, and only rarely finer. The best example that Harry Bass could locate after years of searching was a PCGS AU-55, testifying to the challenging nature of this issue. Doug Winter (2023) calls it "one of the true rarities from this mint, particularly in higher grades."
