- 6 graded MS-64+, 24 higher at PCGS. Only two gold emissions of the twentieth century are known as overdates, the 1909/8 being famously described a year after striking and reported to The Numismatist in the summer of 1910. The overdate escaped detection for a brief time since the 8 was generally effaced from the die, leaving a minute sliver off the left edge of the upper loop and a slightly larger sliver off the right edge of the bottom loop before the new "9" was punched into place. Interestingly, the overdate for 1909 is not particularly scarce, so the premium value commanded over the non-overdate seems to reflect more the fascination with anomalies struck by the U.S. mint than actual rarity. In all grades, the services have certified at least 5000 pieces. Softly candescent medium-gold luster shimmers beautifully beneath a good numismatist's lamp, and a cursory glance further reveals subtle spearmint-green accents on the highpoints, perhaps the result of coin-to-coin contact within a bank roll. All other evidence of contact kindly steers well away from primary focal areas such that the overall appearance very much has that "gem" appeal that any Saint wishes to aspire to. The obverse fields remain generally clean, the reverse fields very much so, and on that side, the most notable abrasions land on the sun itself.
