- 1868 Pattern Cent. Judd-609, Pollock-674. Rarity-7+. Proof-64 RB (PCGS). A bust of Liberty faces left on the obverse with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border and the date 1868 below. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, and the overall design is very similar to that used in the regular issue Three-Cent Nickel series of 1865-1889. The date is set low in the field and is free of Liberty's haircurls. On the reverse, a Roman numeral I is centered within a laurel wreath. Struck in copper with a plain edge.<br /> A rare type that is seldom offered in even large-size pattern collections, Judd-609 has an extant population of probably fewer than six-to-eight coins. The example we offer here is a delightful near-Gem with mottled steel-blue highlights to the obverse interrupting otherwise dominant reddish-orange color. Overall smooth, and seemingly not all that far from a full Gem rating.
