- 1878-CC Trade Dollar. MS-61 (NGC). Pale steel gray with a lively array of varied golden tones and satiny cartwheel luster. Nicely struck overall with just a hint of lightness here or there. From a small production run for the date of just 97,000 pieces, far and away the tiniest circulation strike mintage in the series. On July 19, 1878, some 44,148 trade dollars were melted; it is presumed that they were all pieces dated 1878-CC, leaving a net mintage for the date of 52,852 pieces, which no doubt accounts for the outright scarcity of the date across the grading spectrum. "In Mint State grades, the 1878-CC is rare and highly desirable" notes the Bowers reference. Breen-5824, "misplaced" mintmark far to right over DO in DOLLAR. One of just 25 examples of the date spread across the NGC grading charts at MS-61 or finer, with the "or finer" category terminating with a solitary MS-66 specimen. An attractive coin for the grade, and a piece that is certain to attract strong bidding activity.

Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
Nice things come in pairs seems to be a rule rather than the exception in our Rarities Night sale. What wonderful opportunities exist! And, among these, having the chance to compete for two 1878-CC trade dollars in Mint State is simply extraordinary. Keep your eye on the series and if trade dollars are your specialty be sure to take one home.
