- Tompkins Die Stage 1/1, Rea et al. Die State P. <strong>Tompkins Plate Coin</strong>. A frosty to semi-reflective Choice AU Bust quarter that also retains bold to sharp definition throughout the design. It is lightly toned with wisps of golden-apricot peripheral iridescence framing otherwise silver gray surfaces. Faint hairlines are noted for accuracy, but there are no sizeable or otherwise individually mentionable marks.<p>The 1831 Browning-5 variety combines an obverse also seen in the 1831 B-7 pairing with a workhorse reverse that is seen in three other pairings through 1833. This is a particularly desirable Browning number to represent the Large Letters <em>Guide Book</em> variety, inasmuch as examples are readily obtainable in circulated grades, and also seen quite often in Mint State.<p><strong>Steve M. Tompkins Commentary:</strong> This coin was uncertified when I acquired it, as were many of my early acquisition, and was first certified many years later. It is the only 1831 B-5 I have ever owned; I like it so much that I never bothered to try and upgrade the coin.
