Newman 1-L, Rarity-5
1787 Fugio Copper. Pointed Rays. Newman 1-L, W-6605. Rarity-5. Obverse Cross After Date, No Cinquefoils, STATES UNITED. Fine-12 (PCGS).
155.1 grains. Golden tan on the obverse, pleasing two-tone tan and medium brown on the reverse. The obverse shows some unnatural gloss that suggests a light long-ago cleaning, while some fine pitting is present in the left obverse field. A short scratch is noted at the second S of BUSINESS. Sound rims, good detail for the grade. Rob graded this piece VF-20, perhaps five points too aggressive, and counted it at number 13 on his census. The best he knew of (also the best Mike Hodder knew of) was the Boyd-Ford coin, graded AU in the Ford sale and 50 by Rob. The six-coin Condition Census ranged down to VF and included the impounded Newman coin, the Boyd-Ford duplicate, and the piece in a long-term New York City collection. Rob considered this variety Rarity-6, which is the rarity assignment it enjoyed at the time of the Ford sale. If this piece has indeed slipped to Rarity-5 status, it still ranks high in that range (defined as 31 to 75 pieces) and most of the population is in low grades. Very few Newman 1-Ls show nice surface quality; even the Newman coin (plated in the 2008 Newman work) shows a green spot. The fact that this piece was the best Rob was able to acquire -- and that he acquired it so late in his collecting career -- speaks volumes about its importance.
PCGS# 877.
Provenance: From the Rob Retz Family Collection. Purchased from Dave Wnuck on December 1, 2002.
