- Tompkins Die Stage 3/1, Rea et al. Die State P. Tompkins Plate Coin. Pleasing silver gray surfaces with hints of sandy-russet engaging the peripheral devices. Overall detail is expectably sharp for the assigned grade and points to a well executed strike from the dies. Tiny nicks in the obverse field before Liberty's throat and within the eagle's right wing are the only provenance markers of note on otherwise smooth-looking surfaces; these two marks are plainly evident in this coin's picture in the Tompkins early quarter reference.
The 1818 Browning-2 represents the first of two uses of this reverse die, the second being the 1818 B-3. This obverse die is only known in the 1818 B-2 pairing, and it suffers extensive cracks and clashing that eventually force its retirement. The offered coin represents the earliest die state of this variety included in the Tompkins Reference Collection, the obverse crack from star 7, above Liberty's cap and through stars 8 to 10, now loops lightly to the border outside star 10. Steve Tompkins observes that, "The earliest die stage with no obverse die crack may not exist and if found would be extremely rare or unique." Neither die shows clashmarks on this Tompkins Die Stage 3/1 example.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: When Dave Davis was selling off his quarter collection to other collectors, I was fortunate to receive the right of first choice for many examples. I wanted to buy almost everything, but felt that was unfair to others and chose to pick out only three 1818-dated examples of the B-1, B-2 and B-6 varieties. The B-1 went in a trade to Denis Loring a year later and the B-2 and B-6 became the plate coins for my book.
