What a neat coin! Popular early date New Orleans $5 that is unique at PCGS in this grade. Quite challenging in all grades, from a mintage of 40,120. Doug Winter estimates 200-250 survive today, but as a date, most examples are in VF and XF grades, clearly these circulated extensively in the south. Old toning on both sides of this lightly worn example. Some contact marks are seen on both sides, acquired honestly during this coin's time in antebellum commerce. The eye appeal is quite pleasing. PCGS 16, NGC 13, CAC 4. This is the ONLY AU50+ at PCGS. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $3,350; the last PCGS AU50 CAC sold in June 2020 for $2,250 and the last PCGS AU53 CAC sold well over a decade ago, realizing $3,450 in September 2011.
