The uniform olive-gray surfaces of this Proof Morgan dollar are alive with bold rose, peach, sea-green, and blue iridescence in a bright light source. The <em>Guide Book </em>gives a Proof mintage for this issue, the first in the Morgan dollar series, of 500 pieces, while the Bowers Whitman reference on the series notes: "500 is a a popular estimate, although there is no official figure," noting also that "Proofs are rare and are in special demand to illustrate this one-year reverse style."
