This is a very impressive GEM in every way! A bold, satiny mint luster blooms all over in the fields of this delicately toned beauty. Sharply struck up, this coin has full, crisp definition and they stand out in stark relief against the surrounding fields. Ranking among the finest graded at PCGS and has a very cool story behind it. Our consignor, who travels extensively overseas for business was traveling through China, and happened upon this coin, raw, in a little coin shop. He purchased it and submitted it to PCGS for grading where it was encapsulated as MS65. How does an 1859-S half in GEM grade end up in the back country of China, you ask? Most of the 20,000 piece mintage of 1859-S dollars were struck for the export trade to China. It is quite possible that this coin was in the pocket of some merchant who went overseas at the time and it was saved by the family who received it in commercial channels there. That it survived in such a pristine state in China makes this a real treasure for the advanced Seated half dollar collector. PCGS 5, NGC 3, CAC 2. The other CAC approved MS65 was an NGC-graded coin that sold for $14,950 back in 2008. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $9,000 and PCGS has graded just three coins finer, which includes the PCGS MS66 CAC that we sold in October 2015 for $19,975, and the finest being the Eliasberg MS68.
