- Tompkins Die Stage 3 (late)/2, Rea et al. Die State b (late). <strong>Tompkins Plate Coin</strong>. This is the latest known die state of the scarce 1819 Browning-1 quarter, the obverse with a bisecting crack from the lower right border at star 12 to the upper left border at star 7. A pleasing mid grade example, this Choice VF exhibits warm silver gray patina with hints of rich steel-russet at the borders, the latter color more extensive on the reverse. Smooth in hand with no troublesome marks.<p><strong>Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: </strong>When I purchased this coin more than 20 years ago I was very happy with it as it was a LDS and an all around nice example. As one can see, it shows the weak strike found due to the heavily cracked obverse die. Once again I felt that I would be lucky to ever find a decent upgrade and it did take many years.
