1925-S. PCGS graded AU-55.Lightly toned with some wear showing on both sides on the uppermost devices. This is another date that shows a high mintage, in this case 3,776.500 pieces struck for circulation, but precious few ever made it out of the canvas bags they were delivered in. Most sat in banks or the Treasury vaults and were counted as reserves, not really needed for circulation. Then along came March of 1933 and President Roosevelt called in all the gold coins that he could gather, and off to Fort Knox where they were stored for a brief time then melted into gold bricks. This particular date was nearly wiped out, with about 775-850 pieces thought to exist today. Curiously and unlike some of the other D and S mints from the 1920s, a larger portion of the 1925-S comes circulated, as seen here. Apparently a number of these were issued and entered circulation, and a modest group of these circulated coins survived. Today the 1925-S ranks as the 12th rarest issue of the Saint-Gaudens series. A prized rarity that should not be missed, even in high circulated grades like this. Scarce date (PCGS # 9182) Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000
