- High Grade 1787 Muttonhead Connecticut Among the Finest Known 1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 1.2-C, W-2720. Rarity-3. Mailed Bust Right, Muttonhead, Topless Liberty. AU-58+ (PCGS). 179.0 grains. An outstanding coin that we have had the pleasure to sell three times now, over a span of 45 years. It last appeared in our October 2018 sale o the Archangel Collection, where it was described as follows: "One of the best Muttonheads around, struck from an early enough die state that the date is complete and the legends are nearly so. Frosty and lustrous chestnut and steel brown with exceptional visual appeal. The planchet is broad and the strike is well centered, leaving denticles around most of the obverse. A clip at 1 o'clock does not harm any design elements on either side, and a truly trivial rim nick over T of ET on the reverse is the only mark worth noting. This middle die state shows a few of the letters of the obverse legend lapped away, including E of CONNEC and half of both Os, but the Muttonhead portrait remains sharp. A good EF is a strong grade for a Muttonhead. This one is better than that." After the sale, Richard August published a review of the Archangel highlights in the C4 Newsletter. He had the following to say about this coin: "A voluptuous 1787 Muttonhead which I thought was like a piece of sculpture and was sharply struck with an early full strike and was a Choice MS64 not AU58 brought only $9,600. If I had more years to appreciate this coin I would have bought it. I did enjoy seeing it once though. Who could think that such a coin would survive to date." This is a remarkable commentary from a long-time student of the colonial and early state coinage.
