- Tompkins Die Stage 2/3, Rea et al. Die State b. <strong>Tompkins Plate Coin</strong>. Dusky pewter gray and sandy-apricot patina blankets surfaces that reveal no sizeable or otherwise individually mentionable marks. Overall bold EF detail with plenty of sharper definition remaining in the protected areas of the major design elements.<p>With the faint die lines at star 2 still visible, this coin was struck from the earliest marriage of the 1821 Browning-4 dies; the obverse is shared with the 1821 B-3. The reverse of the 1821 B-4 is also a shared die, in that case with the 1820 B-2 and 1821 B-5 varieties. Only moderately scarce, the 1821 B-4 is readily obtainable in most grades, which makes it a popular variety with both type collectors and die state specialists.<p><strong>Steve M. Tompkins Commentary:</strong> As also seen with the coin in the prior lot, the 1821 B-4 marriage provides collectors with many die stages to pursue. The above MDS is just slightly more common than the LDS offered below in the next lot. One of several coins purchased from Dr. Bruder over the years.
