- 1854 Silver Three-Cent Piece. Proof-63 (PCGS). The Mint changed the composition of the Three-Cent Silver in 1854 to a standard alloy of 90% silver, 10% copper. In order to differentiate these pieces from the billon coins of 1851-1853, the design was modified to display three outlines to the obverse star. Additionally, a bundle of arrows and an olive sprig were added to the reverse, below and above the Roman numeral III, respectively. The new design was also accompanied by a slight increase in proof production for the type, the 1854 being the first collectible proof issue in the Three-Cent Silver series. Yet to call the proof 1854 Trime a ""common"" coin would be doing the issue a grave injustice. The number of specimens produced is unknown, although it must have been extremely limited given that the surviving population is probably on the order of only 15-20 pieces.<br /> This coin is an attractive Choice proof with richly original toning. Warm copper-gray and olive-gray patina dominates the overall appearance, with golden-blue and pinkish-rose undertones coming into view at more direct angles. The finish is unmistakably proof, and we note a shimmering satin-to-semi-reflective sheen to both sides. A razor-sharp strike is also noteworthy in this regard, calling forth even the most intricate elements of the design. There are no outwardly distracting blemishes, and we also do not see any worthwhile pedigree markers to the surfaces. An original representative of a very rare issue, this coin would serve as a highlight in the finest cabinet.
