- Wonderfully original and attractive, this generally honey-olive example also exhibit wisps of warm orange-rose color as the surfaces rotate under a light. Strike quality is outstanding for the issuing mint, both sides sharply to fully defined throughout the design. With a mintage of 17,332 pieces, the 1844 quarter eagle from Dahlonega is among the more available issue from the desirable Georgia mint. Survivors are most often in circulated grades, as is typical for pre-Civil War era Southern gold, and they become quite difficult to locate in grades finer than EF. The striking irregularities of coins produced at Dahlonega are part of the charm and the challenge of collecting. The centers are usually found weak, especially on the higher details of Liberty's hair. Doug Winter (2023) estimates that only 25% bear sharp strikes which, when combined with the scarcity of About Uncirculated survivors, explains the considerable challenge of finding an expertly defined 1844-D such as that offered here. This coin also offers rare originality and premium Choice AU preservation that will result in particularly strong competition between astute bidders.
