1855-O Liberty Half Eagle. AU-50 (PCGS). Warm yellow gold with hints of olive toning. No heavy marks assail the viewer's eyes. One of 11,100 pieces struck, with most of that mintage no doubt seeing moderate to heavy circulation in the Crescent City and its environs. Indeed, that mintage figure is far lower for the date than that of Philadelphia, Dahlonega, and San Francisco, the other issuing mints in 1855. New Orleans gold has, of late, begun to come into its own, and scarce to rare dates such as this are finally getting the attention they deserve.
