- D.W. COLLECTION. A superb AU example that ranks high up in the condition census for this R-5 variety, the B-5, BB-242. Identified by the perfect T in LIBERTY, this is the second rarest variety for the year and is listed as the fourth coin in Dave Bowers' revised early dollar reference. He estimates 75-140 examples of the variety survive in all grades. Satiny underlying luster blooms under rich, totally original envelope toning. The devices are sharply struck and each detail is nearly fully delineated. The highest points and fields show only the slightest hint of friction. Only the most insignificant and tiny ticks are noted for full accuracy but are not really visible to the naked eye. Listed under notable specimens in the 2013 update of Dave Bowers' book, its pedigree is as follows: Howe Collection to the Bolender Collection; Superior's Ruby, Gilhousen III Sale, 1973, lot 1280; Superior's 1975 ANA Auction, lot 1022; Rarcoa's Session of Auction '86 lot 736; Deb-Ann Collection, Heritage, January 2009, lot 3949 (as NGC AU55 sold for $12,650). Its obverse is plated in the Bolender book, and "once called second finest known." PCGS 25, NGC 21, CAC 9. This coin is destined for a great cabinet of early dollars ranking very high in the condition census for the variety. You will likely not see another high end example of the variety anytime soon! If you are an early dollar specialist be prepared to bid aggressively on this superb example! Cert. Number 85100002 PCGS # 40087
