- Undated (Circa 1663-1672) St. Patrick or Mark Newby Halfpenny. Vlack 3-C, W-11540. Copper. Reeded Edge. Large Letters. VF-25 (PCGS). Warm golden-tan surfaces with a well-placed brass splasher at the crown. Crown divides FLORE and AT, harp's angel touches FLO, reverse with with nice centering, even wear, and no damning marks. A choice representative example of the grade and design type combination. Mark Newby came to America from Dublin, Ireland, in , and brought with him the small and large copper pieces that would much later come to be known to America's numismatic community as Saint Patrick farthings and halfpennies. Today's collectors suggest the production of these pieces took place in Dublin, Ireland, sometime circa 1663 to 1672. The Saint Patrick coinage was made legal tender by New Jersey's legislature in May 1682, where they circulated widely, perhaps even seeing circulation in the neighboring states of Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New York. Choice for the grade with no detracting marks present to the naked eye.
