- Tompkins Die Stage 1/2, Rea et al. Die State P. Just a few faint marks from a Gem grade and with abundant visual appeal, this coin was obviously carefully preserved virtually from the time it was coined. The fields are prooflike and reflective, and further enhanced by the bold coppery-gold toning that appears to drift toward the border on the obverse. The reverse is similar, albeit more evenly toned throughout, and with an arc of teal blue at lower right. Boldly struck, the only complaints are some faint hairlines which reside in the fields and a minor scuff on Liberty's cheek. A regal coin that will excite even the most advanced numismatist.<p>The 1828 is the final quarter issue prior to 1831, and the last of the Large Diameter style of the basic Capped Bust design type. Four varieties are known with Browning-1, offered here, representing the only use of both the obverse and reverse dies. It is also the most frequently encountered die marriage of the issue, and a number of Mint Stare coins populate the Condition Census. The NorthEast Collection specimen is among the finest, tied for CC#2 in both the 2008 Tompkins and 2010 Rea-Peterson-Karoleff-Kovach listings. An impressive provenance back to 1960 further enhances the desirability of this outstanding candidate for inclusion in a high-quality type, date or variety set.
