- 1831 Capped Head Left Quarter Eagle. BD-1, the only known dies. Rarity-4. AU-58 (NGC). The obverse and reverse are well-struck with full definition on Liberty's head as well as the eagle's feathers and talons. Clean surfaces throughout, as close study finds little more than light scuffs and nicks from brief circulation. Residual luster in the protected fields, and study finds little more than light wear on the uppermost devices. Scarce at the time of issue with a paltry mintage of 4,520 pieces--most of those were melted long ago as the price of gold rose to a level above face value in 1830 and remained there until August 1, 1834. Today noted expert John Dannreuther estimates that 110 to 125 of these exist in all grades, precious few indeed for collectors seeking an example.
