- 1872-S Liberty Head Half Eagle. AU-58 (PCGS). Here is an exciting 1872-S half eagle that escaped both heavy circulation and melting, a rarity for an early 1870s half eagle from the San Francisco Mint. It has come down to the present day with virtually full softly frosted luster. Deep, vivid olive-orange and honey colors add appeal, as do surfaces that are pleasingly smooth for the assigned grade. Though 36,400 examples of this issue were produced, even marginal AU coins are difficult to come by, while near-Mint survivors are so rare that this is only our third offering for such that we can recall. Much of the mintage obviously saw heavy commercial use, which claimed most San Francisco Mint half eagles produced during the Reconstruction era. A rare opportunity for the alert half eagle collector, this coin would serve as a highlight in the finest cabinet. Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection - CAG Set.
