- This captivating double eagle possesses sharp cameo contrast to the finish. The devices are satiny in texture and intricately defined, while the fields possess both illimitable depth of reflectivity and a subtle, yet discernible orange peel texture. The entire package is dressed in handsome medium golden-orange color, the fields appearing to "go black" as the coin rotates away from a light. Presenting as Choice when viewed in hand, there are no sizeable or otherwise individually distracting handling marks to either side. As visually impressive and numismatically significant as only a well preserved proof Liberty Head double eagle can be.<p>Students of classic United States Mint coinage across all series will concur that the coiners at the Philadelphia Mint were perhaps at no time closer to perfection than in the four year period from 1895 to 1898. The Proofs from that era are of universally high quality, often deeply cameoed in finish and, when nicely preserved, as here, are unsurpassed in quality or eye appeal. For advanced gold enthusiasts, especially specimen type collectors, the search for a single extraordinary Proof Liberty Head double eagle could end with the acquisition of this 1896 through aggressive bidding. One of just 128 Proofs struck for the date, only 30 to 50 of which are believed extant (per John W. Dannreuther, 2018). One would be hard pressed to find a more attractive example of the type or date at the Select Proof grade level.
