1861 $1 PCGS MS65
DLRC #: 1531068 // PCGS #: 6951
Wow! This is a very special coin indeed. As all serious collectors know, any gem No Motto Seated dollar is a rare find. To date, PCGS has only graded 70 coins this high in the entire series! For the year 1861, PCGS has awarded the grade (or finer) just 5 times. Why? Because the coins marked up easily and bag marks of any kind are very distracting on the issue. The example we offer here is a true exception to the rule as it exhibits silky-smooth satiny luster over brilliant white surfaces with a very light skin of an original golden hue. The only marks noted are 3 tiny reed marks between star 6-7 on the obverse and these do not distract. The planchet is extremely lustrous and fresh and also exhibits an overall evidence of die polishing where the mint masters cleaned up the die -- probably just prior to striking this beautiful piece. If you are seeking gem Seated material for type or a date set, this extraordinary piece will make the fussiest collector happy.
