- 1854 Liberty Head Double Eagle. Small Date. AU-50 (PCGS). Bold orange-gold patina with glints of more vivid pinkish-rose iridescence adorning the peripheries. Well defined for the grade with ample satin luster remaining, it is difficult for us to imagine a more appealing Type I Liberty Head double eagle in an AU-50 holder. Although similar to the 1852 and 1853 in terms of total number of coins believed extant, the 1854 is more challenging to locate in the finer circulated and Mint State grades.
