- Tompkins Die Stage 1/1, Rea et al. Die State P. <strong>Tompkins Plate Coin</strong>. This pretty piece retains considerable mint luster in a bright, frosty to semi-reflective finish. Well struck with most features sharp and only trivial high point rub helping to confirm a short stint in circulation. Lightly cleaned ages ago, but now naturally and attractively retoned in iridescent reddish-rose and olive-gray colors that deepen a bit at the borders.<p>The most readily obtainable Browning number of the 1820-dated quarter issue, the B-2 shares its obverse with B-1 and its reverse with the 1820 B-5 and 1821 B-4. A small number of Mint State coins make up the Condition Census, while in pleasing PCGS AU-53 the Tompkins Reference Collection specimen offered here would do nicely in a type set or another specialized early quarter variety collection. The perfect die state is the only one known.<p><strong>Steve M. Tompkins Commentary:</strong> The beautiful toning made it difficult, if not impossible to think about trying to upgrade this coin. As it stands I think I was right in keeping this one for my set piece.
