- Tompkins Die Stage 2/6, Rea et al. Die State b. Tompkins Plate Coin. This is a well struck, appreciably lustrous AU example equally well suited for type, date or variety purposes. It is lightly toned with hints of champagne-gold iridescence on a base of pearl gray patina.
The Browning-4 is the most readily obtainable die marriage representing the Small Letters Guide Book variety of the 1831 Capped Bust quarter. It represents the earlier use of the same obverse seen in the 1831 B-6 Large Letters pairing, and the final use of the reverse inherited from the 1831 B-3 pairing. In addition to extensive cracks, this late die state example shows clear repunching to the digit 5 in the denomination.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: The 1831 B-4 represents an interesting look into the production of the early quarters. During the striking of this die marriage the reeded edge collar die was changed from the 134 reeds found on the EDS coins to one with 150 reeds found on the LDS coins. This collar die was used through the remainder of the 1831 production of the B-5, B-6 and B-7 varieties, and then retired in favor of a new collar die with 149 reeds starting in 1832. To complete a variety set of the 1831 Capped Bust quarter a collector really needs examples of both collar dies of the B-4.
