- 1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 1.2-mm, W-2730. Rarity-7. Muttonhead. Fine-15. 116.1 grains. Deep olive brown with chestnut highlights on the high points, uniform microporosity present on both sides, minor rim knocks noted on both sides as well. Obverse off-center as always for the variety, rim tight to tops of NNEC, just a few faint ticks here and there, none overly deep or offensive, reverse slightly more granular, small pit in field at 3 o'clock, other tiny marks scattered about. A rare prize that combines the common Muttonhead obverse with a rare reverse die that shows a large period (and no other punctuation) between ET and LIB as a diagnostic. The discovery of this rare die combination was first announced by Robert Vlack in the Colonial News Letter (Volume 2, number 2, page 4) in 1961, and precious few other examples have come to light since then, a period of 50 years! The present specimen compares favorably to Taylor:2395 for sharpness of detail, though the present coin has more surface disturbances than that specimen. One of the known examples is holed -- twice -- and has a sizeable gouge; the present specimen is certainly higher in the Condition Census than that coin. Yet another great treasure from the SLT Collection.
