- 1870 Pattern Quarter. Judd-877, Pollock-974. Rarity-7-. Proof-67 Cameo (NGC). Silver. Plain edge. Frosty central devices stand out nicely from deeply mirrored fields. A rich display of fiery golden-orange and bright electric blue gathers at the peripheries. A gorgeous pattern quarter dollar from the Standard Silver series of U.S. patterns by William Barber, produced in several denominations including half dime, dime, quarter, half dollar, and dollar. Stylized Seated Liberty to left with Liberty pole and cap, LIBERTY on ribbon draping shield, 13 stars around, date below. Rv. STANDARD arcs above a cereal wreath of cotton, wheat, tobacco, and corn, 25 / CENTS within wreath. According to the uspatterns.com website, these were issued at the Mint in sets for collectors of the era. As nice as you will find in an NGC holder, and readily one of the most attractive high-grade examples of the variety extant.

Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
A splendid example of this pattern issue, created as a numismatic delicacy in its time, but today the circumstances of its birth are forgotten and it emerges as a first class rarity—destined to be a prize in a fine collection.
