1925-D. PCGS graded MS-62.A nice example with light gold toning here and there. Minor bagmarks as expected for the grade but sharply struck with with the eye appealing luster, color and mint appeal. In terms of rarity, this issue is even a bit scarcer than the 1924-S just offered. This is believed to be the 11th rarest date in the entire Saint-Gaudens series in terms of coins known today. Once again the original mintage of nearly 3 million coins being struck for circulation, however; the vast majority sat around in bank vaults and Treasury stores in inventory or to prop up the reserves of various banks. Thus in March of 1933 when Roosevelt called back all the gold coins in circulation that could be gathered, these 1925-D double eagles were sitting ducks and the vast issue was virtually melted into gold bricks held in Fort Knox. Today is is believed that approximately 800 to 850 pieces survived the melting pots and still exist. Indeed, if that many pieces, according to Coin Facts. Popular semi key date. Nearly all of the known examples grade between MS-62 and MS-64 today, with a scattering of finer examples and a few lower grade and circulated coins that still exist to represent the 1925-D issue (PCGS # 9181) Estimated Value $7,000 - UP
