1807 S-271 R1 Small Fraction, "Comet" Obverse. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown.Frosty steel brown and tan with hints of underlying very faded mint color showing through in protected areas. Darker steel brown toning covers the highpoints on the obverse, and that side is a bit dull thanks to a microscopic layer of oxidation that subdues the luster. The reverse is bright and lustrous. Nearly free of marks, and the ones that are present are trivial. A speck of darker toning in the field above the bust, an extremely faint horizontal hairline on the bust, and a speck of toning near the leaf under the first T in STATES can help identify this cent. MDS, Breen state IV. The "Comet" break in the field behind the head is strong and there are additional linear flaws in the fields and on the neck of Ms. Liberty. Sharply struck and very attractive, but the obverse could benefit from a proper brushing to unleash the mint luster on that side. Graded MS63 Choice and tied for CC#1 with one other piece in the Noyes census, his photo #20735. Bland says MS63 and tied for CC#1 as well. Our grade is MS63. This is the plate coin for the variety in the 1991 Noyes reference on early date large cents. A superior example of this famous and very popular "Redbook" variety. Comes with an important provenance. PCGS population 1; the only RB graded at PCGS.(PCGS # 36455) Value $35,000 - UP
