- 1863 Pattern Three-Cent Piece. Judd-319, Pollock-384. Rarity-5. Proof-64 BN (NGC). The obverse design is very similar to that used to strike regular issue Braided Hair Cents from the early 1840s through the series' end in 1857. On the reverse, the denomination 3 CENTS is centered within a laurel wreath with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the border. Struck in bronze with a plain edge.<br /> This pattern type was created to explore the possibility of issuing a large-size, Three-Cent coin in bronze. The present example is fully struck with handsome reddish-copper patina and modest reflective tendencies in the fields. Several small, scattered carbon spots preclude an even higher grade for this attractive near-Gem.
