- Tompkins Die Stage 1/1, Rea et al. Die State P. Warmly and originally toned with steel-olive and russet in the protected areas around the design elements, lighter pewter gray elsewhere. Bold Choice VF detail from an ideally centered and nicely executed strike, the surfaces are uncommonly smooth for the assigned grade to further support approval by CAC.<p>Last in a trio of scarce 1818-dated quarter varieties that share the same obverse die, the Browning-7 features a reverse die that also appears in the 1818 B-9 pairing. Unconfirmed in Mint State, the Condition Census for this die pairing extends down to the Extremely Fine grade level. The offered coin is tied for CC#6 in the 2010 Rea et al. census, albeit based on its preciously certified grade of NGC EF-45. Initial die state, perfect, with no die cracks on the reverse. In his 2008 reference on this series our consignor notes, "The earliest die stage with no trace of a reverse die crack at N in UNITED is very rare..."<p><strong>Steve M. Tompkins Commentary:</strong> A lovely, original mid grade coin of the very scarce 1818 B-7 EDS. Denis and I traded several examples of the B-7 a couple of times to help both our collections with different die stages. Although these transactions were supposed to be equitable, I was never sure who got the better deal.
